Chase made a disappointed exhaling sound and pivoted his gaze out the window as the car pulled away from the airport. "Shaken, not stirred if you please." Dale winced, "You'd best have a damned good reason for this. Our little meetings are by appointment only. I sure as hell don't need to find you in my cars, house, or every little nook and cranny you choose to show up in." "But my dear Mr. Hammer," the intruder offered, "I am every nook and cranny. I'm in every beam of light, and in every shadow. That's the nature of my business. And when you've been in my business as long as I have, you learn how to lay low and how to not be seen. ...which is precisely what you are supposed to be doing right now." Hammer shook his head in disbelief. He fixed himself a drink at the bar and used the turn of the car through an intersection as an opportunity to look over his shoulder and assure that the other cars were following him. "I've got adequate protection with me as you can see. My event today goes exactly as planned." Frank slowly turned his head downward in a overt look of disappointment once more. "I told you to stay out, or I can't protect you. All bets are off. You want me to help keep you alive, you do as I say. I say I can't keep you safe here." The limousine pulled over to the side of the curb and the door slid open. Chase slowly emerged from the opening and walked away without looking back. There was no further discussion and the sentiment between the two was obvious. Dale's plans were being carried out with or without the support of his associate. Frank's ability to protect was no null and void, and Hammer was on his own now. Selfishness gave way to a battle of egos, a battle of egos gave way to the hiatus of an alliance, and the hiatus gave way to Hammer's personal bodyguard being summoned to the front car in the entourage. The line of cars pulled away from the curb and as they eased into the distance, a single gunshot was muffled inside the rear of the front car. It appeared that there had been yet another promotion in the Dale Hammer bodyguard division.
